What is the inspiration for your design?
Growing up in a tropical country, often times my designs were inspired by biophilic components surrounding me. As a child who travels a lot, I tend to be fascinated by the coziness of resort bathrooms, hence, I wanted the bathroom design to bring the outdoors in, featuring a mixture of beach and rainforest elements look and feel. As the main concept is maintaining hygiene and eco-friendliness, the design focuses on using natural, organic materials and sustainable design solutions. Beige coloured quartz slabs are used to represent sand, brown from the wood symbolising the warm temperature of beaches and contrasting greenery presenting rainforests to complement. With the nature-inspired compositions, the design hopes to contribute in creating comfort, sustainable yet maintaining a luxury resort experience for travelling guests.
Who is the target user and how does the design fulfill the need of the target user?
The design targets guests coming for leisure trips, more specifically couples or families with children. Most of the time, guests return to the place of accommodation exhausted, therefore, a neutral colour palette consisting of woody brown, ivory and grey with hints of green from vegetations is used. When blended together with warm-coloured lighting, it creates a tropical, fresh ambience and a cozy atmosphere for the users to relax in. Having separated toilet and shower areas allows the user to do their business while their partner uses the rest of the bathroom.
How does the design fulfill the theme for the chosen category?
With the heightened alerts and enhanced requirements for health and hygiene standards due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the design incorporates touch-less products offered by American Standard to minimise the spread of germs and bacteria. In addition, materials such as quartz and soapstone for walls, floorings and other surfaces are chosen for their high resistance against bacteria and stains due to their non-porous characteristic. Greenery is also added to the space to purify air, absorb moisture as well as for aesthetics. Focusing on hygiene and cleanliness, a separated toilet room may prevent contamination from flushing as well as privacy. To add on, research has also proven that natural ventilation helps prevent airborne viruses, hence, window openings and auxiliary fans are installed to address these concerns.
How does the choice of products contribute to the purpose of the design?
With hygiene and health as the main concern, the choice of touch-less products and antibacterial technologies help maintain the cleanliness of the bathroom. The design also focuses on sustainability, therefore with sensor faucets, not only it reduces the spread of germs, the use of water also becomes more efficient compared to manual use. To add on, with the Double Vortex water closet from the Acacia Evolution catalogue allowing half flush, water is also saved, contributing to the eco-friendly solution of the bathroom. In addition to this, with the entire interior of the bowl effectively cleaned, the ComfortClean solution offering maximum hygiene, hence offering guests a worry-free stay.
